Artist

 

John Dawkins has spent a lifetime in art and design. He trained at Southend College of Art. Although he had dreams of being a painter, the practicalities of life, and having a young family, encouraged him to specialise in Graphic Design which he knew could give him a regular income. A career in design followed, mainly in London based design and advertising companies. After several years he was encouraged to take on management responsibilities, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Though still working in a creative environment he was doing less and less creative work. He started painting again, in his spare time, specialising in marine painting.

 

His lifelong interest in maritime history playing a big part in his choice of subject matter. He was soon at The Mall Galleries in London exhibiting with The Royal Society of Marine Artists. He has also exhibited on The South Coast and in his previous location of Southend on Sea. On retiring he moved to Suffolk and his work has diversified into landscape, townscape, transport painting as well as life and portrait work. He works across several media, including oils, acrylics, watercolour and pencil. He has regularly sold work over the last 20 years
